Description In 2021, EMERGENCY marked the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan with the release of Afghanistan20, a comprehensive report on the impact of the conflict. EMERGENCY, an NGO that provides free medical care to victims of war, worked with Accurat to create a rich historical narrative. The result was a multimedia experience combining print and digital formats, enriched with first-hand accounts, original photography and interactive data visualizations.Accurat's role in Afghanistan20 was part of its initiative to undertake pro bono projects. The report highlights the devastating impact of the war on Afghan civilians and showcases EMERGENCY's humanitarian efforts in the region. Through data-driven storytelling, the project humanizes the conflict and provides a poignant perspective on the lives affected by the ongoing violence.Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding the project's release, including the death of EMERGENCY founder Gino Strada and the chaotic U.S. troop withdrawal—both in August 2021—the collaboration produced a powerful document. The dedication and patience of the Accurat team was instrumental in delivering this impactful narrative, in keeping with the principles of data humanism. The project also included a custom printed report with unique paper formats that added a tactile dimension to the experience.
